Baltimore, Go see Jenny Owen Youngs!

kellyneel:

So here’s the thing…I just applied to be a writer for the examiner.com where you essentially pick a topic and write little 200-400 word blurbs about said topic for your city (baltimore in my case) and you get paid a little. That being said, the topic I chose was Baltimore Musician Examiner, and they require you to send a sample of what you might write. Well, Jenny has a show on Saturday in Baltimore so I wrote about that…and here it is, enjoy (unfortunately didn’t add the picture in my application):

On Saturday night, The Golden West Café in Hampden will play host to Jenny Owen Youngs. Youngs is a singer/songwriter hailing from Brooklyn, NY and is best known for her hilarious, albeit amazing, acoustic rendition of Nelly’s “Hot in Herre”. Go beyond the cover songs however and you will find a quirky, yet sincere heartbreaker who can shred on the guitar. (She can even play the intro to Stairway to Heaven with the guitar behind her head)!

You may have heard her music featured on popular shows such as “Weeds” or “Grey’s Anatomy” or listened to one of her albums but until you hear her live, you really haven’t heard her! Band in tow or solo, she does not disappoint, singing with such subtle yet heartbreaking emotion on slower tracks and rocking the sadness right out of you on faster tracks.

In addition to all her talent, she is also actively involved in raising awareness for the fight against cancer! Her song “Here is A Heart” from sophomore album “Transmitter Failure” has been the inspiration for a collaborative project in which Youngs and cancer survivor/expert crafter, Jenn Michelle Pedini, use recycled materials to create little plush hearts that they sell online. All of the proceeds they collect go directly to the Stand Up To Cancer organization!

With her unique songwriting, amazing voice, and kind heart, what’s not to love about Jenny Owen Youngs? Do yourself a favor and make sure you stop by The Golden West Café this Saturday night!

(Show begins at 9pm, Tickets: $10. Also performing: Josh Small, and Tim Barry)

You guys… all of this is true except for Grey’s Anatomy, a show which has never featured my music…  unless you count the time that Dan Romer and I webcasted ourselves watching season 1 straight through with the sound off, creating our own dialogue & soundtrack as we went with just our voices, one guitar and one piano.  Also THAT NEVER HAPPENED either.  But hey!  That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t come out to a show!  And buy a heart to help me & Jenn help Stand Up To Cancer.  Win win win win win.
