Reeling in the years.
The Roxie is a San Francisco fixture nearly as permanent as the Painted Ladies and untouchable salsa verde. Now the oldest continually operating cinema in the country, The Roxie has enraptured denizens of the Mission since 1909.
Over the past few years, the theater has been undergoing a critical transformation into a nonprofit film center. Always a champion of independent programming, The Roxie is now making that passion part of an ongoing organizational commitment to filmmakers, patrons and neighbors.
It’s a rebirth after more than 100 years — but it won’t be possible without a groundswell of community support. Backers can score passes, DVDs, and memberships among other rewards, while ensuring that the community maintains a vital outlet for cinematic weirdness of all kinds.
