Every Friday (I know I’ve skipped a few but I am BACK ON TRACK) I will share a story about a song from the new album here on Tumblr, until I run out of songs (math suggests this will go on for a total of eleven weeks).
O GOD is track 4 on AN UNWAVERING BAND OF LIGHT. The seed of this song showed up in my brain December 17th 2009 in Zurich, Switzerland. I was on tour supporting the amazing Regina Spektor in the UK and Europe. That tour was particularly inspirational to me… spending time in beautiful cities, getting to know Regina’s wonderful band and crew, playing in gorgeous venues packed with the sweetest showgoers on earth. Don’t worry, though - I still found time to feel low and start writing a sad song! While I was warming up backstage, fiddling around with my guitar and voice, the beginnings of this song emerged and I recorded them into iMovie lickety-split. You can hear the “O god” run is a bit different and the chorus had yet to take shape… but Rome wasn’t built in a day, y’all! I finished writing it when I was back home in America.
Dan wanted this song to have a big sweeping string arrangement so we brought in Dave Eggar (cello) and Jonathan Dinklage (violin, viola). Those guys tore it up. The little instrumental break in the song features a ukulele and banjo playing a variation on the melody together, blending their little tones together into something that sounds a little stranger than either instrument alone.
